Hey, TPT ---

Had an idea for a blog post..

Could you work up something on how to deal with people who are very successful & well off financially - and yet are really stupid, uncultured, uneducated slobs who can't believe that someone with a law degree is a broke loser?

Seriously, I'm financially ****** 20 years after deciding to go to law school in my early twenties -- now I'm in my forties struggling with student loan debt, starting over from the bottom in a completely new career.

Problem is, when I tell people I can't afford to go out to eat, take vacations, etc., they don't believe me. I'm sick of them asking me for effing advice on their effing investments.. Student loans take all my dough - WTF would I give a **** about stocks?

And I can't get over how much better off I would have been if I would've gone and warmed a desk chair at state -- no, county -- government for the last 20 years. I wouldn't have student loans, would have decent health insurance, and would have a way better retirement plan with an actual pension.

But I was a so-called smart kid and sought to improve myself, and busted my ass for the last 20 years -- my reward is being a broke loser. Serious WTF? Where else could this happen except in the legal profession?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, yes, YES. One of the most frustrating aspects of this business is the lack of simple management skills. The partnership process does not select for management ability, and it shows.

It really sucks to find out how much work has not been done because everybody thought that someone else was doing it. Especially when you find this out at 5:00 in the morning, just hours before a closing, after you've been working three days without sleep.

How hard is it to have a short internal meeting at the start of a deal (or case, if you're working litigation), and clearly define everyone's area of responsibility? Is that so hard? Really? For many senior attorneys, it apparently is too much trouble.

The first partner I worked for always sat down with his team at the start of every deal. We walked through the checklist, and figured out who was doing what.

I left his practice because "it wasn't the kind of work I wanted to do". What a fool I was! And I've been paying for it ever since. Didn't know how good I had it.

Of course a 380 can't take off at LaGuardia.

But it wouldn't stop the tax guy from trying. Probably using a couple of intercorporate loans, maybe a synthetic lease, a restructuring plan involving 26 powerpoint slides, and an opinion from local counsel in Luxembourg.

Also, the flight has to stop for at least 2 hours in the Cayman Islands.

A lot of this is drawn from personal experience. I used to be a word-processor and actually had a colleague who showed up for the graveyard shift in clown shoes and a polka-dot scarf and yes, she was a performance artist who played electric violin. I knew a secretary who showed up drunk and never seemed to get fired, too. And a paralegal obsessed with his sports car.

This was pretty funny, but your point is absolutely valid. I ended up doing management consulting instead of practicing law, and the kickoff meeting is critical to getting the project / deal right. Everyone understands who is working with, the relative priorities they will give to the project vis-a-vis other obligations, and the working styles of their colleagues. In addition to making you feel some ownership, even as a junior, it helps in terms of planning and avoiding run-ins when things get stressful
